Imagine if you will that it’s December 31st and the New Years Eve ball is about to drop. Family, friends and loved ones circle around to celebrate new beginnings and fresh perspectives. You make a list: what you’ll do, what you won’t do, what you’ll gain or get rid of in the upcoming year. It might consist of a few sentences or maybe it's a LONG agonizing inventory of non-negotiables. Fast forward 5 months and by the time June rolls around you have gone completely mad trying to stick to your resolutions or maybe you’re totally off track and can’t even remember what in the world you had promised yourself almost half a year ago.
I have been there. I used to set goals on the last night of December (which I absolutely believe is a healthy and valuable tool). However, what I found was that I would get discouraged when I wasn’t reaching those goals or not giving them enough attention. I would give myself too much to focus on or set limits far outside of reason. I wasn’t in tune with what I really needed. I wasn’t compassionate with myself and in the long run it became a burden, a heavy weight placed on my shoulders every January 1st. What a silly way to begin the new year. I mean this was completely opposite of me trying to live a healthier more balanced lifestyle.
Well what if you could shrink your New Year’s goals, aspirations and resolutions down into one word? That is exactly what a large group of people from all over are doing. OneWord365 is an online forum where people choose one word that describes how they want themselves or their life to be for the new year. You can find your tribe (others that share the same word as you) and read their posts about it. It's a great way to connect, be inspired and live with intention.
Now you might say, “But Darcel it’s June, not January.” Well of course it is but that doesn’t matter. There’s no better time to start over then now… or now… or now. January, June, July, it’s all the same. Every moment is an opportunity. Arthur Ashe once said, “Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.” So let’s do it! Let’s all take a second or two and see if we can’t squeeze our 2014 resolutions into one word. Easy right?
Go ahead and contemplate.
One more minute now.
Do you have it yet?
Ok so maybe it's not super easy and you’ll probably need more time then just a few moments to figure it out but it's worth it. Take all the time you need even if your 2014 word comes just in time for 2015. For me after much reflection, much more than a minute or two, I found my 2014 word while doing yoga in my livingroom. Are you ready?
: the act or process of moving people or things from one place or position to another
: the act of moving your body or a part of your body
: a particular manner or style of moving
: abundance of events or incidents
: a change of position or location of troops or ships
: a series of organized activities working toward an objective
The word movement for me represents so many wonderful aspects and goals in my life. Not just physically but mentally and emotionally as well. Although I am determined to remember this word, I have written it randomly all over my house just in case I forget. Whenever I see it I smile and that’s how I really know it’s the word for me.
Now it's your turn. What word moves you for 2014?
